Glaucoma affects as many as 4 million Americas, or 2% of all adults over the age of 40. Unfortunately, many people with glaucoma don’t even know that they have it because there are not any symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

Glaucoma can be easily diagnosed by your ophthalmologist and treated to prevent optic nerve damage. This is one of the reasons why regular eye examinations for all people over the age of 40 are recommended. While anyone can get glaucoma, there are some people at a greater risk of developing the disease. These groups include:

  • Age, the older you get the greater the risk
  • People with high blood pressure
  • Diabetics
  • People with a family history of glaucoma
  • Those you have suffered an eye injury or trauma
  • African Americans are five (5) times more likely to develop glaucoma
