Dr. LoBue and staff are excited to welcome our new provider, Dr. Jean-Paul Abboud. Dr. Abboud is an ophthalmologist with further specialty training in orbital and oculofacial plastic surgery, also known as oculoplastics. We are happy to announce that Dr. Abboud is joining our team to treat patients in need of oculoplastic care.

A Special Kind of Specialist

Dr. Abboud began his journey at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he achieved his PhD in biomedical engineering followed shortly thereafter by his Doctor of Medicine. While in school, Dr. Abboud recounts watching surgeons perform their delicate work and mimicking their hand movements. Inspired by the finesse of the surgeons he worked with, Dr. Abboud made a decision to pursue surgery as a career and completed his internship in General Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Having developed his surgical skills and an appreciation for facial surgery, Dr. Abboud pursued his goals and was accepted as an ophthalmology resident across the country at University of California San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute. During his time in residency, Dr. Abboud performed many procedures in and around the eye and further honed his abilities. Dr. Abboud completed his residency and earned board certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Abboud was selected for West Virginia University’s prestigious Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship program. This program is one of only four that are accredited by both the American Society of Ophthalmic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (ASPORS) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Here he completed a comprehensive course of training in the field of oculoplastics. Dr. Abboud is a member of ASPORS and upon completion of his fellowship, moved back to California to treat patients in private practice.

More Than A Surgeon

Inspired by his parents’ passion for education, Dr. Abboud developed a curious mind and lifelong love of learning. He also inherited a great devotion to teaching. Beginning as a teaching assistant at Rutgers, he continued teaching as a clinical instructor during his residency and fellowship. Beloved by his students, a council of his peers awarded him the Outstanding Teacher Award at UCSD. Dr. Abboud organized a lecture series and workshops designed to improve suture skills. He has authored book chapters and articles as well as lectures at conferences worldwide.

Research has always been a topic close to Dr. Abboud’s heart. Possessed by an inquisitive mind, he developed a desire to advance medicine. As a doctoral candidate, Dr. Abboud studied retinal development and has since presented this research at scientific conferences.  His current goals include development of new imaging techniques to assist with treatment and diagnosis as well as further investigation of thyroid eye disease.

In his free time, Dr. Abboud enjoys an active life with his family. A skilled artist, he enjoys traditional oil painting as well as wood burning and photography. Dr. Abboud has also mastered graphic design. He enjoys international travel and has explored several European countries, China, Mexico, Dubai, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, and Cyprus, to name a few. Most importantly, Dr. Abboud enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.

Dr. Abboud performs a variety of surgical and nonsurgical procedures such as Botox, eyelid surgery, removal of growths and lesions, and many more. To schedule a consultation, call us at (951) 696-1135.
